South African Theological Seminary

The South African Theological Seminary (SATS) is a fully accredited and registered, distance education institution, which focuses on equipping Christians for service, right where they are in their local church.

SATS is convinced that the subjects pertaining to children and youth minstry, are of paramount importance and therefore offer a wide range of subjects including Introduction to Youth and children’s Ministry, which is compulsory for Bachelor of Theology students. Assignments include advocacy with  churches to have more ‘child-friendly’ ministries,  introducing better measures to effect growth and development of the faith of the children in the congregations, guidance for parents towards helping their children learn to know and love the Lord. Adv also seeks to influence mission board organizing committees to include children’s evangelism workshops in their programmes.

One of our students, a pastor, commented: “This course is brilliant. I am focusing on theological courses as much as I can and as little as I can on practical courses since I already do a lot of practical ministry.  In the past, much of what happened in the children’s church has been run by the youth and a select few faithful adults. After much discussion and searching of the Scriptures, we, as the pastors and elders of this church, have decided to completely change the format of the children’s ministry in New Life Church.”

Assignments relating to youth include researching the trends affecting youth culture and sub-cultures in the student’s local community, visiting three different youth pastor/leaders, ascertaining their church’s approach to youth ministry, investigating certain ministry models, looking at strengths and potential pitfalls, and then evaluating their own church climate to grow a healthy ministry and suggesting effective ministry strategy.
